Background
Atishoo was launched in January 2006 by Gillian Webster, after several years' frustration at the lack of stylish handkerchiefs available on the market, especially for women.
Gillian researched the idea from her native Glasgow and on trips to London, Paris, Florence and New York, to size up the competition. The result was Atishoo.
The exclusive designs reflect a love of fashion and colour and the desire to see good design in all aspects of everyday life. From stationery to umbrellas, Gillian believes that design can elevate the most routine of items to a pleasure-giving level, improving our day-to-day lives immeasurably with its inspirational qualities.
The new range of handkerchiefs displayed on the site have been specially commissioned by Atishoo as a progression from the launch range of 2006, following feedback from our customers on their design and colour preferences.
The new hankies have been digitally printed on a newer, more luxurious cotton sateen fabric, which is naturally softer and has a slight sheen to the surface.
We have also used a wider, flatter hemming technique to maintain the shape of each hankie after washing.
The handkerchief, although a very practical and ancient item, is also a wonderful fashion accessory, adding a new dimension to any outfit when tied to a handbag, used as a neckerchief or looped together as a belt.
The 'for keeps' hand-made Atishoo packaging, with its brightly coloured drawers, reflects the handkerchief's historical position as an heirloom item, stored in granny's top drawer. This was Gillian's earliest memory of these small squares of fabric, as an inherited, softly scented reminder of a much-loved relative.
The Atishoo range has also expanded to include colourful silk scarves and beautiful silk, fabric covered greetings cards.
Keen to grow the company in the UK and internationally, Atishoo plans to wholesale its handkerchief sets through department store accessory departments and to grow the range quickly to include men's and children's handkerchiefs. So watch this space...
